At Centra Internal Medicine, we provide comprehensive healthcare services that extend beyond general internal medicine. Our primary care services also include women’s health services, which is a fundamental aspect of our healthcare provision.
One of the essential women’s health services we offer is the gynecological exam, also known as a pelvic exam. This crucial examination is usually performed by our healthcare professionals, who have vast knowledge and experience in women’s health. The primary objective of the gynecological exam is to ascertain the health status of a woman’s reproductive system, from the external to the internal organs.
Our healthcare professionals use the gynecological exam not just to diagnose and treat infections and menstrual irregularities, but also to monitor the health of the reproductive organs during pregnancy, provide early detection and prevention of cervical and ovarian cancer, and provide contraceptive counseling.
The examination process at Centra Internal Medicine is thorough and patient-centered. It begins with a detailed conversation about the patient’s medical history, sexual activities, contraceptive use, menstrual cycle, and any related concerns.
The physical examination that follows is conducted professionally and with the utmost care. It involves an external examination of the genital area, an internal examination of the vagina and cervix, and a bimanual exam performed to assess the size as well as position of the uterus and ovaries.
The frequency of gynecological exams is typically determined by factors such as age, health history, sexual history, and specific health risks.
General Guidelines:
• Teenagers (13-18 years) should have an exam every three years or more frequently if sexually active or experiencing any gynecological symptoms.
• Women in their 20s should start having these exams at the age of 21. From ages 21 to 29, a pelvic exam should be performed every year, and a Pap test every three years if not experiencing any gynecological symptoms.
• Women in their 30s and 40s should have a yearly pelvic exam. A Pap test can be performed every five years if it’s combined with a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. If you only have a Pap test, then it should be performed every three years.
• Women in their 50s to 65 should have a yearly pap smear pelvic exam, and breast exam as recommended by one of our healthcare providers at Centra Internal Medicine.
• Women above 65 may be advised by our medical team to stop having these tests if they’ve had normal results for several years.
Factors that May Alter Frequency at Centra Internal Medicine:
• Sexual History: Women who are sexually active or have multiple sexual partners may need more frequent exams
• Gynecological Symptoms: Any symptoms such as vaginal discharge, pain, or irregularities in menstruation warrant a gynecological exam
• Health History: Cases of health issues such as pre-cancerous cells or a genetic predisposition to certain types of cancer, may necessitate more frequent exams.
• Chronic Health Conditions: Women with conditions like diabetes or immune suppression may need more frequent exams.
A gynecological exam, or pelvic exam, is a routine procedure that allows us to assess the health as well as the functionality of a woman’s reproductive system. During your initial examination at our practice, we will review your medical history, including current symptoms, concerns, sexual activity, menstrual cycles, and contraceptive use.
The pelvic exam typically includes three parts, beginning with the external genital exam, then the speculum exam, and followed by the bimanual exam. Our healthcare providers are experienced and trained to conduct these exams with utmost care and professionalism, ensuring your comfort throughout the process.
In addition to the pelvic exam, we may also perform a breast exam and an abdominal exam to assess the health of your breasts and abdomen, respectively.
Once the exam is complete, we will discuss the results and any necessary follow-up steps. The team at Centra Internal Medicine is dedicated to ensuring you understand your health status and any necessary preventive measures or treatments.
At Centra Internal Medicine, we prioritize women’s health and encourage regular gynecological exams as a crucial part of maintaining overall health. Initiating routine gynecological exams is recommended between the ages of 13 to 15.
Our care is tailored to each patient, ensuring that the initial visit is comfortable and informative. We discuss everything from menstrual health to what to expect in future exams, and we aim to identify any potential reproductive health issues early on.
As part of our comprehensive care, we continue to provide annual gynecological exams once a woman becomes sexually active or reaches 21 years of age. These exams include detailed medical history intake, physical examinations, and discussions around puberty, contraception, and sexual health.
Our gynecological examination involves various tests that are designed to maintain and monitor a woman’s reproductive health. The examination begins with a pelvic exam, during which our healthcare providers inspect the external genitalia for any abnormalities. This is followed by a speculum examination to check the cervix and the lining of the vagina. During this procedure, we may carry out a Pap smear, a crucial test for cervical cancer screening.
We also conduct a thorough breast exam to check for signs of breast cancer. Our healthcare providers check for any dimpling, swelling, or changes in skin texture or color in both breasts. We palpate the breasts for any lumps or masses and examine the lymph nodes under the arms for any enlargement.
At Centra Internal Medicine, we also offer testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) if necessary. This is typically carried out alongside the Pap smear for sexually active women.
Based on a woman’s age, health history, and family history, we may recommend additional tests. For instance, we may recommend an ultrasound to evaluate the size and shape of the internal reproductive organs or a colposcopy if a Pap smear shows atypical or precancerous cells.
